Should you buy JP Power share price in 2023?

Investing in JP Power shares requires careful consideration. JP Power is a small cap company with a marketcap of Rs. 6500 Crore.

The company has shown a mixed performance over the past five years, with sales ranging from ₹3,284 Cr in 2020 to ₹5,787 Cr in 2023. However, expenses have also increased significantly, reaching ₹4,666 Cr in 2023. This has resulted in varying levels of operating profit, ranging from ₹887 Cr in 2020 to ₹1,121 Cr in 2023.

JP Power is trading at 0.625 times its book value which makes it a good investment opportunity.

Though the numbers are not that impressive, but good thing about JP Power is that the company has reduced its liabilities in the last 3-4 years.

The company’s earnings per share (EPS) have been inconsistent, with values ranging from -₹3 in 2020 to ₹0.08 in 2023. These numbers suggest that JP Power’s financial performance has been volatile and may not be attractive for income-focused investors.

Also the current PE ratio stands at 904, which in my opinion makes the company overvalued. The power company needs to post  better financial result for company share price or valuation to go up from here.

Furthermore, the projected share prices for the coming years indicate potential risks and uncertainties. While the maximum prices show some growth potential, reaching ₹19.10 in 2030, the minimum prices range from ₹7.34 in 2029 to ₹13.37 in 2030. These fluctuations highlight the potential for market volatility and emphasize the need for a cautious approach.

Considering the mixed financial performance, inconsistent earnings, and uncertain share price projections, investors should conduct thorough research and seek professional advice before making any investment decisions.

Assessing the company’s overall financial health, industry prospects, and risk tolerance is crucial for determining whether investing in JP Power shares aligns with one’s investment objectives and risk appetite.

I would personally avoid investing in JP Power, as the public holding is 49.15%, whereas promoters, FIIs and DIIs together hold a little over 50%.

Once the public holding reduces to less than 20%, I might relook into the company. But as of now, I will be avoiding. I also understand the share price might jump by 20 to 30% in the near term, it will still be a stock I will be avoiding atm.
